Description
This was produced as a gift to S. Dengli of Larnaca. Thus here we have Durga, resolute and powerful, speedy yet graceful, ferocious yet compassionate and set to do battle in the name of Holiness and peace, set against the selfishness of Her arch-foe. This Hindhu goddess of war and victory is an often depicted subject from the Hindhu pantheon, and is also seen as an aspect of Shiva's consort, Parvati, Who is considered an embodiment of the female essence. I have tried to capture this essence and ethos with a combination of various styles, while trying to create my own orientalist Art Nouveau-esque style of drawing and graphic art. For this piece of work, mistakes omitted, it took me but 4 hours to get everything right, but it took me almost 4 weeks just to conceive it, contrast it against other works like Mucha's and do research on what was to be depicted, and other alternative styles (the Balinese and the Khmer have had produced different forms, mimicking their own cultures and environments so different to that of northern India.)
A copy of this work is in the hands of Sofia Dingli.
